This year, 2022, the Canarian Foundation for Deaf People and Their Families (FUNCASOR) marks its 30th anniversary. In recognition of this milestone, and prompted by the communication challenges faced by the community when interacting with emergency services in recent years—particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption on the island of La Palma—the Foundation's Board of Trustees has organized a conference entitled “Deafness and Emergency Situations: Present and Future.” The event will take place on October 20 and 21, 2022, on the island of Gran Canaria.
This conference aims to raise awareness and foster reflection on the circumstances faced by people with hearing impairments during various emergency situations, encompassing both large-scale disasters and daily life occurrences. It will address every stage, from the initial emergency alert and access to response services to the ongoing monitoring of personal and family well-being.
FUNCASOR seeks to highlight the expertise of professionals from diverse organizations involved in emergency response, review current action plans, and propose new frameworks to enhance the accessibility of emergency services for this community.
The organization warmly invites the entire Spanish university community to participate in this conference and to submit presentation proposals, including research projects, action plans, or digital applications related to the event's theme.
