In 2022, the Canary Islands Foundation for People with Hearing Loss and Their Families (FUNCASOR) celebrates its 30th anniversary. For this reason, and due to the communication difficulties this community has faced with emergency response teams in recent years—including during the COVID-19 pandemic and the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma—the Foundation’s Board of Trustees has decided to organize a conference titled “Deafness and Emergency Situations: Present and Future” on October 20 and 21, 2022, on the island of Gran Canaria.
These workshops will aim to raise awareness of and reflect on the situation of people with hearing disabilities in various emergency situations—both during disasters and in daily life—from the initial notification of an emergency and access to emergency services to the follow-up on their personal and family situations.
FUNCASOR seeks to evaluate the experiences of professionals from various organizations involved in emergency response, as well as to assess current action plans and propose new ones, with the goal of making emergency services more accessible to this group.
The organization invites the entire Spanish university community to participate in this conference and to submit proposals for presentations, such as research studies, action plans, or computer applications related to the conference’s theme.
