June 14 is an important day for the deaf community, as it marks National Spanish Sign Languages Day. The date was chosen by the Council of Ministers to commemorate the founding of the National Confederation of Deaf People (CNSE).
This year’s celebration is being held under the slogan “Free to Choose, Free to Sign,” with a special focus on deaf children and their rights. Among other things, they are calling for early intervention and a high-quality, comprehensive education for deaf children that includes sign language to prevent the onset of “disabling conditions,” such as, in this case, Language Deprivation Syndrome.
As they do every year, various institutions throughout Spain celebrate this day by lighting up their facades in turquoise, the color that represents the deaf community.
Organizations belonging to the CNSE association movement will gather in streets and squares throughout Spain to highlight the importance of sign languages in the lives of deaf people and to involve the general public in this linguistic heritage through various activities.
