June 14 is a significant day for the Deaf community, commemorating the National Day of Spanish Sign Languages. The date was designated by the Council of Ministers in commemoration of the founding of the State Confederation of Deaf People (CNSE).
This year, the commemoration takes place under the motto "Free to choose, free to sign", focusing particularly on deaf children and their rights. Among other demands, they call for early intervention and comprehensive, quality education that includes sign language for deaf minors to prevent the onset of "disabling situations" such as Language Deprivation Syndrome.
As in previous years, various institutions across Spain celebrate this day by illuminating their building facades in turquoise, the color representing the Deaf community.
Member organizations of the CNSE associative movement will gather in streets and public squares throughout Spain to highlight the value and importance of sign languages in the lives of deaf individuals, while engaging the public with this linguistic heritage through diverse activities.
